Skills & Development – Lanzarote

We are proposing to offer a long weekend of paddling in Lanzarote in late January 2025.  This would be an opportunity for paddling during the UK winter in a mild climate and warm waters.   The details are as follows:

Dates: 23rd to 27th January 2025.  Outward travel would be on the Thursday 23rd,  followed by three days of paddling on the 24th, 25th and 26th, and return travel on Monday 27th January.   You could of course chose to extend the trip and stay on the island longer if you wish.

Kayaking: We would be using the services of Sea Kayaking Lanzarote https://www.seakayakinglanzarote.com. Their coach Juan is a highly experienced and friendly coach and they have a range of kayaks and excellent equipment. The three days will involve journeys mixed with skills development and coaching in moderate water conditions.  You therefore must be at least at Sea Kayak Award level to join the trip (although you don’t need to have completed the assessment).  This is a great opportunity to explore the island coastline and practice skills such as rescues in warm waters. There may be an opportunity for a long day trip to paddle on the neighbouring island of La Graciosa (depending on weather and the wishes of the group) at and additional 15 Euros per person.

Weather: The sea temperature at the end of January is around 19 degrees and the air temperature can vary, depending on wind and cloud cover.  It’s usually between 17 and 22 degrees at that time of year.

Travel: You will need to arrange your own flights for the trip.  Once on the island, there is a good public bus service from the airport to Playa Blanca where we will be based.  Sea Kayaking Lanzarote will collect us each day from our accommodation and provide all transport needed to launch sites.  Therefore there is no need for hire cars.

Accommodation – We plan to arrange shared accommodation for the group in a villa or apartments in Playa Blanca. Playa Blanca is a tourism hub with restaurants and cafes along the sea front.  The group can choose to self-cater or eat out in the evenings.

Costs: You should expect to spend around £550 to £650 on the trip plus the cost of meals:

Flights: Currently range from c. £110 to £250 depending on which airline /airport you choose.  Flights from Luton/Stanstead tend to cheaper than those from Heathrow and Gatwick.  You should not need checked in luggage for this trip which cuts down on flight costs.  You will only need summer kayak gear. Cags and wetsuits are provided if needed.

Kayaking: The cost of coaching/trips and equipment hire is 85 euros per day (this will reduce by 20% if we have a group of 6).If we chose and are able to go to La Graciosa there may be a small extra cost.

Accommodation: Costs will vary depending on room share arrangements but we hope to secure accommodation for around £50 per night per person.  If you wish to make your own accommodation arrangements, that’s also an option.
