Trip outline. This is a day paddle along the South Coast from the harbour at Shoreham-on-Sea to Rottingdean. The route follows the coastline, passing Brighton pier and Brighton marina, before heading towards the white cliffs around Rottingdean. The aim is to reach Rottingdean for lunch before conducting the return leg. Note that this trip moved from Saturday to Sunday 15 June due to the tides.
This is an ideal paddle for those relatively new to the sea, but with the stamina to stay in the boat and make the distance (8nm/16km each way, about 2.5hrs). You should have been on some Thames paddles this year and stayed in your boat for all of the time on those paddles as we will not stop on land until we reach Rottingdean. The landing at Rottingdean can be through a bit of surf, so we will land one at a time to assist each other. Rottingdean has toilets, cafes and an attractive sea front with cliffs and a windmill.
Grade: B (Explorer Award level or equivalent experience). Guidance on gradings – Trip and Session Guidelines « Chelsea Kayak Club. Remember the club provides all the kit needed for this trip (e.g. buoyancy aid, paddle, spray deck and cags), as well as boats.
Timings: We plan to launch around 10am (exact time tbc) and be back at the launch site at about 15:00.
Conditions. All trips can only go ahead if the conditions of sea and weather permit and this can only be assessed in the few days before the day of the trip. There will be a WhatsApp group set up for those going and an on-line meeting before the trip. The trip is also dependent upon being able to move and recover the appropriate number of kayaks to the trip start point.
