Notice to Mariners - Upper Thames

15 Aug: Eastney to Emsworth

Detail of Trip: A summer day trip on the sea from Eastney to Emsworth, to explore Langstone Harbour and Emsworth Harbour. Safe paddling inside the harbour, so limited sea state or swell likely. Flows with the direction of travel both ways. This trip is a good sea trip for people who have not yet been on the sea and recently got the Explore award, or maybe have done your Discover and not yet managed to do the Explore but have been paddling on the Thames or elswhere so have some further experience and paddle fitness. It will be about one hour 15 minutes each direction before and after lunch stop. .

Grade: A/ B. So Discover level and above but hopefully you have done more than just complete Discover and that you have been out paddling on the Thames as well since your Discover training. Guidance on gradings – Trip and Session Guidelines « Chelsea Kaya Club. Remember the club provides all the kit needed for this trip (eg buoyancy aid, paddle, spray deck and cags), as well as boats.

Travel : This will involve the need for car drivers who have roof racks that can carry kayaks to take either their own boats or club boats. Sharing of cars is encouraged so limiting the number of cars going.  

You will need to take a change of clothing which are dry and also bring packed lunch and drinks.

Trip Plan: Launching at Eastney. (Southsea Sea Angling Club) beach, Heading northwards to Emsworth.

Distance each way 5 nm approx. 10 km

Timings: On the Water: 11:30, planning to be off the water around 16:00.

Tidal Planning: HW 14:20 LW 19:10

Communications: will by Club CKC Community What’s App group for the signed up paddlers.

Cost: The club has a process of calculating travel costs to be shared amongst all the participants. This covers the cost of petrol and a percentage for wear and tear. Estimated cost is £20 (based on two sharing a car).

Maximum number of people excluding lead is 6 people. The minimum number of people is 3 including the leader.

Please sign-up by noon on Saturday 1 August 2026. Note that the organiser will confirm your place on this trip after the sign up deadline and arrange a call to organise the logistics for the day. If you are in any doubt about your suitability for this trip, please discuss with the organiser directly.
