Notice to Mariners - Upper Thames

Sun 11 Oct: Chichester Harbour

(Option for independent travel & kayak hire)

Detail of Trip: A weekend day trip in Chichester Habour starting from West Itchenor – where it is possible to hire sea kayaks from Fluid Adventures for CKC members who have Discover award or above. Safe paddling inside the harbour, so limited sea state or swell likely. The current does increase near W Itchenor. This trip is a good sea trip for people who have not yet been on the sea and recently got the Explore award, or maybe have done your Discover and not yet managed to do the Explore but have been paddling on the Thames or elsewhere so have some further experience and paddle fitness.

Lead : Fiona

Date: Sunday 11 Oct 2026

Grade: A/ B. You need to be at Discover level and have done some other paddles since your Discover training. Guidance on gradings – Trip and Session Guidelines « Chelsea Kaya Club.

This trip is designed so that paddlers can be independent of needing club kayaks to be transported on roof racks and we can hire from an independent provider, at additional cost.

Travel :
If there are CKC members who want to join this trip & have cars able to give lifts, and roofracks able to carry their own boats or club boats – this is welcome but not necessary. Sharing of cars is encouraged so limiting the number of cars going.

If travelling independently – aim to be on 10.55am Bus 53 leaving from Chichester bus station to Shipton Green & then walk 36minutes.

Plan: Meet West Itchenor 11.30am for a briefing, if needed use single toilet under Harbour office steps & then 11.50am start sorting out kayaks with Fluid Adventures. Launch from W Itchenor 12 noon heading to Fishbourne (~6km)

Aim to get to Dell Quay by 12.50pm – stop for snack ~15min (Although HW is 12.50 the current will turn slightly later)

Return to West Itchenor & finish trip ~2pm & return kayaks.

If we have time and space – then we will practice some rescues before handing back the kayaks

This trip is within 2 hour hire window.
Then probably go to nearby Quarterdeck cafe at North Shore in Itchenor if we want for a warm drink/lunch or even icecream before heading home!

You will need to take a change of clothing which are dry and also bring packed lunch and drinks. Packed lunch either quickly eaten at mid-point of trip or decide whether to eat before or after as is best for you. HW & hire time limitations means we can’t have a leisurely lunch!

Timings: On the Water: 12:00, planning to be off the water around 14:00.

Tidal Planning: HW 12:40 & LW is 17:50 – spring tides & tidal range is 4.4m

Communications: will by Club CKC Community What’s App group for the signed up paddlers.

Cost:

Transport: Your own travel costs to West Itchenor (train & bus). Or If CKC paddlers can offer lifts & kayaks then the club has a process of calculating travel costs to be shared amongst all the participants. This covers the cost of petrol and a percentage for wear and tear. Estimated cost is £20 (based on two sharing a car).
KAYAK: if CKC kayak & Kit can be used – these are free to use. Otherwise hire NDK Sport plastic kayak & spray deck, BA, & Paddle from Fluid Adventures is £30/2hours https://www.fluidadventures.co.uk/hire Hiring from Fluid Adventures includes the £7 harbour fee.
