Trip outline. This is a day paddle from a beach on the South Hampshire coast to the Isle of Wight for a late lunch. On the way we visits three of the Solent forts, as well as the site of where Henry VIII’s Mary Rose sank. We will be a long way from shore, have to deal with all types of boat traffic (eg hovercrafts, ships, yachts and Royal Navy vessels), will be crossing the shipping lane as well as the Solent. The trip is approximately 2.5 hours each way, a total of 25km/12nm.
As the trip is a sea crossing it essential paddlers are able to maintain a good speed and a straight line against potential flow and/or wind, that they listen and follow leaders instructions and are practiced at being able to get out of their boat to self rescue and assist in rescues when needed. Paddlers should be prepared to stay in their boats for 2-2.5 hours each way.
