Moderate Water Coached Weekend
General Information
In June 2027 we are planning a return trip to Pembrokeshire for a moderate water coaching weekend. This will be the fourth year we have held a coaching weekend with Sea Kayak Guides. Previous trips have been much enjoyed by club members due to the superb location and expertise of the coaches.
Dates: Paddling Friday 16th, Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th April (ie 3 days of paddling). You will need to travel down on Thursday 15th April. Due to the distance, it is likely you will need to allow most of the day for travel. Return travel late on the 18th April may be possible but is not recommended due to the long distance.
Who is this trip for? This coaching is aimed at those who are Sea Kayak Award level or above (you don’t need to have the formal award but should be roughly at this level). The coaching will focus on moderate water personal paddling and group leadership skills. The coaching ratio will be 1:4 to allow us to paddle in moderate water conditions.
Moderate water conditions are classified as wind up to F4, tidal flow up to 2 knots, waves up to 1 m (including surf landings) and up to 2nm (4km) between get out points). The coaching ratio is 1:4 and to ensure that we offer a good experience for everyone we will be confirming places in groups of four.
Travel: We will co-ordinate lifts in cars for those who need them (depending on the number of members driving and available spaces).
You must have a dry suit to come on this week due to the water temperatures at this time.
Estimated Costs
Coaching fee: £263 per person for the three days (with coaching on a 1:4 ratio)
Kayak rental: We plan to transport club boats depending on the number of volunteer drivers with roof racks. If we cannot transport sufficient kayaks for the whole group, the cost of kayak rental is £30 per day / £120 for the course. These costs will be split evenly between members who are not transporting club kayaks or using their own kayak for the weekend.
Travel Expenses: Petrol, wear and tear on cars transporting kayaks and parking during the weekend will be split amongst participants in accordance with the Club expenses policy. Please bear in mind that you should expect these additional costs.
Accommodation: We plan to book self catering accommodation. We anticipate the cost to be around £40 per person per night.
Meals: We plan to arrange a mix of self catered and pub meals for which you will need to budget. Members will arrange their own breakfasts and packed lunches.
