Notice to Mariners (NTMs) – Upper Thames

Notice to Mariners - Upper Thames

31 Oct: Tanners Lane to Lepe

Detail of Trip: A late Autumn day trip on the sea on the North Solent coast. This trip is a perfect ‘first sea trip’ for people who have recently got the Explore award, or who feel confident and fit enough to cope with the movement of the sea and waves. This is a relatively short trip for those who are not yet ready for longer sea trips.

Lead : Liza

Date: Saturday 31 Oct 2026

Grade: B that is Explore Award level or equivalent experience. Guidance on gradings – Trip and Session Guidelines « Chelsea Kayak Club. Remember the club provides all the kit needed for this trip (eg buoyancy aid, paddle, spray deck and cags), as well as boats.

Travel : This will involve the need for car drivers who have roof racks that can carry kayaks to take either their own boats or club boats. Sharing of cars is encouraged so limiting the number of cars going.

You will need to take a change of clothing which are dry and also bring packed lunch and drinks.

Trip Plan: Launching at Tanner’s Lane, in the heart of the New Forest. It is trip that just follows the coast along the Hampshire coast ( Handrailing) heading Eastwards to Lepe. Lepe is a beach beside a cafe and car park, toilets, so facilities for lunch are available. However I recommend still to take a packed lunch.

If any paddlers find this distance too challenging there are other places to rest or stop for lunch if need be along the way to Lepe. Distance each way 5 nm approx. 10 km (total ~20km)

Timings: Meeting at Tanners Lane by 10.00 hrs. (to get boats off the cars and pack the kayaks. ) (Therefore we Need to leave Kew Bridge by 7.45hrs if traveling directly from collecting boats from CKC base )

Launching time, On the Water: 10.45 hrs.

Lunch break at Lepe 12.45 hrs. Launch for return trip by 13.45 hrs. Planning to be off the water around 16.30 hrs , to drive back from Hampshire to CKC at Kew Bridge to wash the kit and boats before putting them away.

Tidal Planning: HW LW 00

Communications: will by Club CKC Community What’s App group for the signed up paddlers.

Cost: The club has a process of calculating travel costs to be shared amongst all the participants. This covers the cost of petrol and a percentage for wear and tear. Estimated cost is £20 (based on two sharing a car).

Maximum number of people excluding lead is 6 people. The minimum number of people is 3 including the leader.

Please sign-up by noon on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Note that the organiser will confirm your place on this trip after the sign up deadline and arrange a call to organise the logistics for the day. If you are in any doubt about your suitability for this trip, please discuss with the organiser directly.
